Holiday Pet Safety
We all love to decorate our homes with colorful pretty things during the holidays, but did you know that some things can be hazardous to your furry, scaly, or feathered friend? Here are some tips to make sure your pet stays out of trouble during the holidays that you might not think could hurt them.
N Lilies can be used during the holidays, mainly found in floral arrangements; any form of lilies can cause liver failure in cats. Holly and Mistletoe are another plant that can hurt your pet; Holly can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and exhaustion if eaten by your pet. Mistletoe may leave you wearing gas masks on Christmas morning (meaning it gives them gastrointestinal upset and even cardiovascular problems)
N Your Christmas tree may contain fertilizer, so keep our pets water bowl full, to prevent him/her from drinking the tree’s water. Fertilizer can cause nausea, diarrhea, or upset stomach.
N Eating the holiday turkeys, hams and such, in large portions, may give your pet an upset tummy, and you may find spots of vomit or diarrhea.
N Tinsel, ornaments, ribbon, and hooks. If your pet eats these things they could suffer from internal injuries. So pick up after decorating the tree. Be alert of your pet while around the Christmas tree.
N Most holiday treats, because of such sugar content, can hurt your pet causing anything from a tummy ache to death, example chocolate is the worst.
N Make sure your tree is sturdy, if your pet suddenly decides to jump on it, or accidently hit it when playing, it could fall onto you or your pet.
N Be sure not to leave Christmas lights on while letting your bird fly, rat wonder, or cats and dogs run around. We aren’t the only ones that think lights are pretty, but the difference is that the animal will be interested in it, and try to play with it. Possible electrocution, burn, or tangling.
N Also those candles can be hazardous to your pet. Just like lights, animals will be curious and want to play with it.
N Don’t forget to care for your pet during the busy, scattered weeks of holiday excitement.
Hope you and your pet have a safe and merry Christmas.
